The Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship

 ** A Call For Writers **

Greetings Indigo People!

Ahh, summer! It's back! Why not begin it by earning some cool hard cash? We are now introducing our new affiliate program, which includes a compensation incentive. That means you can earn money by featuring books that we carry. Details are below.

Even as we make our summer plans, we cannot forget (although we would love to forget) that our country is in a state of crisis politically. Please read the story "Save the Internet." Yes, that's right, our free and open internet rights are being threatened and may be taken away
-- very, very soon.

Write to your congressman, read a book, and have a safe and happy summer.

Thanks for your support!

Save the Internet!

The internet as we have come to know it is under threat. A new bill in Congress would convert the internet into a three-tier system where you must pay to play. Large cable outfits and phone companies could slow down small non-paying sites and speed up paying sites. That favorite blog, newspaper, or fan site that you like to read could be slowed down to the point where you won't be able to see it (translation: eliminated).

Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the Internet's First Amendment -- a principle called Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work best for you -- based on what site pays them the most. If the public doesn't speak up now, our elected officials will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying campaign.

The truth about the climate crisis is an inconvenient one that means we are going to have to change the way we live our lives. In order to face down the danger that is stalking us and move through it, we first have to recognize that we are facing a crisis. So why is it that our leaders seem not to hear such clarion warnings? Are they resisting the truth because they know that the moment they acknowledge it, they will face a moral imperative to act? Is it simply more convenient to ignore the warnings?

Palast's old-style gum-shoe detective work to dig out the info on the War on Terror, greed-dripping schemes to seize little nations with lots of oil, the hidden program to steal the 2008 election, and the media biases that keep it unreported are the meat and bones of this BBC television reporter's new book. Armed Madhouse is illustrated with dozens of documents marked "secret" and "confidential" that have walked out of file cabinets and fallen into Palast's hands.

The "top journalist in America and the funniest" (Randi Rhodes, Air America), takes his previous New York Times bestseller a step further with hot undercover dispatches - hanging out the dirty underpants of the "armed and dangerous clowns that rule us."

The Whale Caller, Zakes Mda's fifth novel, is his most enchanting and accessible book yet-a romantic comedy of sorts in which the changing face of post-apartheid South Africa is revealed through prodigious, lyrical storytelling.

As the novel opens, the seaside village of Hermanus, on the country's west coast, is overrun with whale watchers-foreign tourists wearing floral shirts and toting expensive binoculars, determined to see whales in their natural habitat. But when the tourists have gone home, the Whale Caller lingers at the shoreline, wooing a whale he calls Sharisha with cries from a kelp horn. When Sharisha fails to appear for weeks on end, the Whale Caller frets like a jealous lover-oblivious to the fact that the town drunk, Saluni, a woman who wears a silk dress and red stiletto heels, is infatuated with him.
