Greetings Indigo People!   ( Who are “Indigo People”? )

We've put together our first annual summer reading list which we hope you will enjoy. We figure with the heat and all, why not catch up on some classics you may have forgotten to read or want to re-read?

Hope you enjoy the selected new and noteworthy books for this month, which features Colin Channer, a neighbor and friend. His latest work has been published by Akashic Books, a local publisher, who are also neighbors and friends!

This month we planned to endorse Kevin Powell as a candidate for our local district here in Brooklyn, but he has dropped out of the race. The article endorsing him is included here anyway, since it goes into some detail about our current Congressman, Ed Towns, and why he should not be re-elected.

Keep reading and thank you for your support!

Kevin Powell For Congress

Update: Kevin has dropped out of the race as of 07/05/06. We are pretty disappointed that he is not going to be our next Congressman. Since there is no way in God's green Earth that Indigo could support Towns, we will have to get back to you on who we will support. The following is the article I wrote in support of Kevin for the site and newsletter, before I found out he had dropped out of the race.

Please vote for Kevin Powell for Congress in the New York Democratic primary on September 12. It's time that this district (NY District 10) had a progressive voice in office. I encourage people from this district and all over the US to support Kevin. Please send money for his campaign as this is a grassroots movement to get him elected.

You may remember him from MTV's The Real World (back when it was a useful experiment in looking into the lives of young people). But he has done so much more since those days. I actually know him a bit. He read at our store when we were a storefront. He has always been a big supporter of Indigo. I recognize in him a true progressive spirit attempting to make people's lives better. He is young, brash, and full of energy. I think that he will represent this district well in Congress. ... Set in the Caribbean and the U.S.A., the stories sweep across a range of moods and genres to create a narrative LP of fascinating voices. From the old lady who gives a speech on "How to Beat a Child the Right and Proper Way", to the schizophrenic singer who thinks he's Bob Marley, to the hotel maid who gets a sexual offer that she can't refuse, the diverse mix of characters are linked by the fundamental principle that all clichéd conventions must be shouted off the page. In the proudly odd tradition of Jamaican music, the selections seek to entertain while asking daring questions that provoke new ideas into being.

A Hope in the Unseen introduces a teenager who studies as if his life depends on it -- and it does. An honor student walking the gauntlet of sneers and threats at his crime infested high school in Washington, DC, Cedric Jennings achieved the impossible: a 4.02 grade-point average and acceptance into Brown University. Yet the Ivy League world, with its bewildering array of intellectual and social challenges, presents situations almost as intimidating as the inner city. Only Cedric's faith, intelligence, and willpower can sustain his hope in an unseen future -- a life of rewards he struggles, each day, to envision.
