Each screening will be followed by a discussion and a book sale. We've included the dates with this newsletter but please check our events calendar for more information.

"I am a baseball fan, and I love this book. It is so refreshing to have a sports writer who writes with such verve and intelligence, who also has a social conscience, and who refuses to keep those parts of his life separate. This is a rare contribution to social history, something I have been looking for, a sports history which understands how the issues of race and class are inextricable from the world of sports."
— Howard Zinn, third baseman, switch hitter.

George Clinton, Black Power, and the Story of P-Funk
by Lloyd Bradley

Our Price: $19.55 — save 15%!

Where'd You Get That Funk From? goes beyond the wigs and the boots and through a series of in-depth interviews and sharp cultural analyses that put George Clinton in his proper context. That is, as a radical part of black America's turbulent 1960s; as being as musically representative of detroit as Motown; as leading the first soul group to employ circus hands among their roadies; as being able to pull together music a diverse as that of Bach, the Beatles, James Brown, Frank Zappa, the Moonglows, and the Supremes to create P-Funk, which became a cornerstone of West Coast hip hop.

Known as Little Pakistan, the community of Midwood, Brooklyn, has suffered a remarkable exodus in the years since 9/11. One sixth of the community—20,000 people—has left in search of liberty. Resurrecting Empire Resurrecting Empire
Western Footprints and America's Perilous Path in the Middle East
by Rashid Khalidi
Retail Price: $23.00
Adds 2 stamps to your Frequent  Buyer Card
We all know that those who refuse to learn history are doomed to repeat it. Sadly, as Khalidi reveals with clarity and surety, America's leaders seem blindly committed to an ahistorical path of conflict, occupation, and colonial rule. Our current policies ignore rather than incorporate the lessons of experience. This cogent and highly accessible book should help U.S. citizens to recognize better solutions.

Indigocafe.com 2005 Life & Ethics Film Series

Coming this fall, Indigocafe.com will be sponsoring our very first film series.
The films will be screened at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, a beautiful historic building here in Brooklyn. We hope that the screenings will be insightful, informative, and a chance for our community to gather and discuss the issues that the films raise.

FILM 1: A Panther in Africa *
"A Panther in Africa" is both heartening and heart-wrenching in its exploration of what life has held for Pete O'Neal since he fled America for Tanzania. O'Neal founded the Kansas City chapter of the Black Panthers in the 1960s. On October 30, 1969, he was arrested for transporting a gun across state lines. O'Neal fled the charge, and for over 30 years, he has lived in Tanzania as one of the last American exiles from an era when activists considered themselves at war with the U.S. government.
Date: Monday, September 12th at 7pm

FILM 2: Long Night's Journey Into Day
For over forty years, South Africa was governed by the most notorious form of racial domination since Nazi Germany. When it finally collapsed, those who had enforced apartheid's rule wanted amnesty for their crimes. Their victims wanted justice. As a compromise, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was formed. As it investigated the crimes of apartheid, the Commission brought together victims and perpetrators to relive South Africa's brutal history. By revealing the past instead of burying it, the TRC hoped to pave the way to a peaceful future.
Date: Monday, October 10th at 7pm

FILM 3: Every Mother's Son *
In the early 1990s, police forces throughout the U.S. began employing more aggressive and militarized tactics. Whatever the reasons for this trend, one result has been a rise in the number of citizen complaints about police brutality in many American towns and cities. "Every Mother's Son" recounts three cases of unjustified or questionable police killings in New York — and tells of the victims' three mothers who came together to demand justice and accountability. Are such killings acceptable or necessary trade-offs for public safety? In reply, the mothers have their own question: What if it were your child?
Date: Monday, November 14th at 7pm

These film screenings are FREE and open to the public. Each events will be followed by a discussion, refreshments, and a book sale.

* Indigocafe.com will be screening these films in collaboration with P.O.V., the acclaimed independent nonfiction film series on PBS, and with our cosponsored the BSEC Ethical Action Committee.
